Meltem Karakuyu is a Turkish contemporary visual artist and art educator based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. With a background in fine arts education and academic research, her artistic practice explores themes of identity, displacement, belonging, visibility and the relationship between human figures and nature.

Working primarily with acrylic painting and mixed media, Karakuyu creates compositions in which female figures interact with botanical forms, layered environments and symbolic elements. Her work investigates the boundaries between concealment and visibility, examining how personal experiences, cultural memory and changing environments shape individual identity.

Having lived and worked in Turkey, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, her international experience has contributed to an artistic perspective informed by migration, cultural encounters and the search for belonging.

Alongside her artistic practice, Karakuyu has an extensive background in higher education. She has taught fine arts and art education at university level, combining artistic research with practical approaches to visual expression and creative learning.

In 2026, she founded ARTBRIK in Eindhoven, an independent contemporary art studio and creative space bringing together artistic production, art education, exhibitions and collaborative projects.

Artistic Practice

Karakuyu's paintings explore the relationship between the human figure and its surrounding environment. Female figures frequently appear within dense botanical compositions, where natural forms become visual metaphors for protection, transformation, vulnerability and belonging.

Through layered colours, intricate details and carefully constructed compositions, her work creates a dialogue between the visible and the concealed.

Her artistic approach draws on personal experiences of geographical and cultural transition while examining broader questions of identity, memory and the relationship between individuals and their environments.
